The AEC AH760 Engine & Wilson 5 speed Semi-Automatic photos
These are a few snaps of our powerplant and running for AEC enthusiasts and the just plain curious.
The AEC AH-760 is a massive engine both physically and in capacity. Boasting 13 litres of displacement, this old power-plant should chug away for many more miles yet! We have been told that these old girls were good for a few million miles between rebuilds.
In the next photo here you can clearly see the rusty stains resulting from the water leak around the injector, usually due to a rusted injector tube, or even worse a cracked head.
The view from the rear clearly shows how low or flat the massive AEC diesel sits in the chassis. The engine bay in the Swift is actually much much larger than the engine and accessories.
The air- Compressor for the braking system and gear changer etc is at the rear of the vehicle, and the diesel injector pump can be seen behind.
Not exactly the biggest radiator I have seen for an engine this size. The AH-760 was notorious for overheating in the summer months, so we may look into grafting a much larger cooling system to the engine in the future.
This is the "Brain-Box" for the Wilson 5 speed pneumo-cyclic transmission. Here 24 volt signals from the drivers gear changer are translated into compressed air to operate and change the various gears.
The left side of the Wilson box and the extension or clutch housing.
The right side of the Wilson box with some of the air valves and pistons.
A dark photo but the 24 inch tailshaft and safety catcher can be seen, and the front of the "back to front" diff.
