Vehicle Selection

Selecting the correct vehicle and motorhome Class

Motorhome Classes

  1. Class-A - Fully self-contained converted buses
  2. Class-B - Motorhome built on a truck or van cab/chassis
  3. Class-C - Motorhome built on a truck or van cab/chassis with a bed over the cab

We have decided back on the Travel Criteria page what type of travel and the destinations we have in mind.

Now we can tune this information up further and begin to select the vehicle type that is best suited to our needs!

The main points to consider being:
  1. The type of Motorhome
  2. Travel and destinations
  3. Number of people to accomodate
  4. The type of "camping" we will be doing
  5. The duration of the trip
  6. Lastly - The budget
    Examples:
  1. You intend travelling around Australia for 12 months or so, mostly adhering to sealed highways, camping in caravan parks when available.

    Class B motorhome

Definitely an A, B, or C Class motorhome here. A matter of preference really. An A-Class bus either front-mid-rear engined, or a "Winnebago" type Class-B or C, all 2WD, with low ground clearance is fine with care!

You will need a comfortable fitout with a good solar system, larger refridgeration, shower and cassette or black tank toilet, with large fresh water and grey water tanks. You will also have a larger house-battery bank, 200-400 watts of solar, even airconditioning and maybe a car on a trailer behind!

  2. You intend travelling around Australia for all time, mostly travelling good roads, "free camping" in the bush or beside the road, and generally avoiding civilization.

    Class A motorhome bush camp

Definitely a Class-A motorhome here. Ground clearance is important. A reliable vehicle fully self-contained is a must!

You will want storage bins underneath, enough solar panels (500-1000 watts) and batteries to cater for a week of no sun, a backup generator, dual refridgeration, shower and cassette or black tank toilet, with larger fresh water and grey water tanks, and LP gas bottles if required. Airconditioning and luxury appliances become less important, as all your appliances will be running from solar batteries with inverters as required. Maybe a 4WD car on a trailer behind!

This is the type of build that we are discussing on this site!

  3. The 2 of you will be travelling across Australia for 2-3 months at a time, and you still live at your home "base camp" address.

Class C motorhome Probably a "Class B or C" Motorhome would suit, we do not cover Class B or C on this site.

  4. 2 or 3 people travelling every holiday season to a resort or camping ground.

Campers This sounds like Caravan or PopTop material here. We recommend you Google for Camping - Back Packing etc as we do not cover Vans or Tents on this site.

Summation

If you have calculated that you will require an A-Class motorhome for your build (ie: a Bus), then that is exactly what is covered here on this site.
